Starting Montessori is a big step for both you and your child! Here are some tips to help with a healthy separation when dropping your child off at North Star:

Prepare Gradually:

Start talking about school in a positive way. Visit North Star together if possible, and read books about starting school to help your child visualize the experience.

Establish a Routine:

A consistent morning routine can help ease anxiety. Include time for a calm breakfast, getting dressed, and a few minutes of connection, like a favorite activity or a short walk.

Create a Goodbye Ritual:

Develop a special goodbye routine, like a hug, a kiss, or a secret handshake. Keep it short and sweet to reassure your child that you’ll see each other again soon.

Stay Calm and Confident:

Children pick up on your emotions. If you seem anxious or unsure, your child might feel the same way. Stay positive and confident during drop-off.  Make it short and sweet.  Lingering will only enhance your child’s uncertainty.

Acknowledge Feelings:

If your child is upset, acknowledge their feelings. Say something like, “It’s hard to say goodbye.  I know you will have a great time at school, and I’ll be back soon to pick you up.”

Encourage Independence:

Montessori encourages independence, so talk to your child about the exciting things they’ll do on their own at school, like choosing activities or making new friends.

Communicate with the Teacher:

Keep in touch with your child’s teacher about how they’re adjusting. Teachers often have strategies for helping children settle in.

Be Consistent:

Consistency helps your child adjust more quickly. Drop them off and pick them up following the same routine every day to create a sense of security.

Trust the Process:

Separation can be tough at first, but trust that it will get easier with time. Children usually adjust within a few weeks as they become familiar with the new environment.

Celebrate Success:

After school, ask your child about their day by offering cues for communication instead of open-ended questions like, “What did you do today?”  Instead, ask specific questions like, “What snack did they serve today?”, “Was there a puzzle that you worked on?”, or “Who did you sit next to at circle time?”.  Celebrate the small successes, like making a new friend or trying a new activity.

These steps can help your child feel more secure and confident as they start their Montessori journey at North Star Montessori!
