In Montessori education, sports and physical activity are approached with the same principles as other areas of learning—emphasizing independence, self-discipline, and the holistic development of the child. At North Star, our Montessori environments integrate physical movement into daily life rather than isolating it as a separate activity, encouraging students to develop coordination, balance, and motor skills through both structured and unstructured play.

Here’s how we typically incorporate sports and physical education at North Star:

Natural Movement and Free Play:

From an early age, Montessori encourages students to engage in natural movement as part of their daily routine. Students are free to move around the classroom, explore the environment, and choose activities that often involve physical movement. Students in our Montessori environments learn through discovery, meaning they are always actively engaged in the Montessori materials they are working with.  They are not passive observers, as you typically see in traditional classrooms.

Outside play is a key part of the day in our Full-Day classes, where students can run, climb, and engage in physical exploration every day, rain or shine. These unstructured activities build foundational motor skills and help develop strength, coordination, and confidence in their bodies.

Practical Life Activities and Movement:

Many practical life activities in Montessori help students develop fine and gross motor skills, which are essential for sports. Tasks like carrying objects, sweeping, balancing, and pouring require careful control and coordination, similar to the skills needed for sports. These activities indirectly prepare students for more organized physical games and sports by honing their balance, precision, and spatial awareness.

Structured Physical Activities and Games:

In the Extended Day Kindergarten program and through the elementary years, North Star introduces more structured physical activities, games, and sports. These activities are still rooted in the Montessori philosophy of respect for others, cooperation, and personal responsibility.

Twice per week, students at North Star participate in our Physical Education program, which includes a multitude of activities depending on the time of year and interests of the group.  These activities include (and are not limited to) fencing, soccer, rock climbing, swimming, jujutsu, fitness, skating, mountain biking, etc.  The majority of these activities take place off school grounds and the students either walk, take public transportation, or a private school bus to these locations.

Outdoor Exploration:

Our Full Day Montessori students (Casa and Elementary) regularly spend time outdoors at our neighbourhood park, enjoying the beautiful nature that North Vancouver has to offer.

In summary, sports in our Montessori environments at North Star are integrated into daily life and focus on natural movement, coordination, and skill development rather than competition. Physical activities are designed to nurture the whole child—physically, emotionally, and socially—allowing students to develop their physical capabilities in a supportive and self-directed way.
