What is your role at North Star Montessori?

My role at North Star Montessori is both an assistant and an educational support person in the Casa Room.

How did you first learn about Montessori?

I always knew that I wanted to work with children and when I finished high school I volunteered in a daycare.  Although I learnt a lot at the daycare, I knew that I had more to offer.  I left Early Childhood Education and pursued other interests.  My true passion of working with children all came together for me when heard about Montessori from my cousin who had just finished her Casa Training. I started reading more about Dr Montessori ‘s work and I knew this was for me.  I took my training 18 years ago and have been teaching since then.

What did you do before you decided to become a Montessori teacher?

Before I took my training I worked in the beauty industry as an Aesthetician. It was a great career at the time. I owned a small salon and was able to travel.  I also had the opportunity to live and work in Montreal for 2 years.   Once I took my Montessori training, I knew I would never choose another career.

What are some of the highlights of your work with children?

Some of the highlights of working with children are when I observe a child spontaneously choose work or help another child. I also enjoy when a child discovers something for the first time.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love spending time with my son Jalen and my husband Azim. My family is my world and I enjoy cooking for them, playing board games, biking and family movie nights.  I am very close to my two sisters, my niece and nephews.  Sunday night dinner at my parents’ house is always a special night.

When I’m not with them, I enjoy hiking with my sister, my book club and girls’ nights out!

Keeping on the theme of free time, what would be your ideal holiday?

My ideal holiday would be a family trip to Europe. Jalen really wants to go to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower … One day soon!!!
