Uniforms

A safe and self-disciplined learning environment is an essential element of North Star Montessori Elementary. The implementation of uniforms was an administrative and Board decision brought into effect in 2005. Land’s End is the current uniform supplier.

Our uniform policy is intended to keep the focus on learning activities. It is also a way to show pride in our school community both at the school and during our many outside activities. The purpose of this policy is to provide for increased school safety, to minimize disruption, and to easily identify trespassers on campuses. School uniforms also help students to experience a greater sense of school identity and belonging.

All Students require:

Indoor Shoes: Students are required to wear indoor shoes at all times in the classroom. The act of removing “outdoor shoes” is significant for the children’s awareness of the unique quality of the learning environment. Running shoes that the child can put on and take off independently, are ideal

Outdoor Clothes: School and weather appropriate clothing. An extra set of rainwear – rubber boots, a rain jacket and rain pants – should be kept at the school for unforeseen inclement weather.

Jewelry: Students may wear stud or ‘sleeper’ earrings, a small chain and pendant and a watch. If at all possible, jewelry should be avoided all together.

Casa (preschool) students do not wear uniforms, however, extended- day kindergarten children are required to wear the PE uniform on PE days.

The benefits of school uniforms include:

  • Putting the focus on academics rather than clothes and fashion
  • Cutting down on the expense of school clothes
  • Instilling a sense of belonging as a member of a group
  • Helping students and parents resist peer pressure
  • Safety on school outings

Policy

North Star Montessori Elementary students are required to attend school dressed in the school uniform as outlined on the Land’s End website (www.landsend.com/school). If there is a valid reason for your child to be out of uniform, please write a note to the student’s teacher. If a student attends without the correct uniform, the first violation will be marked by a written notice to the parents. On the second occasion the child will not be permitted to class and will be sent home. All enforcement of this policy is at the discretion of the Head of School.
